What you need to know about Rabies Exposure?

Regular Vaccination for Pets

Ensure your pets, especially cats and dogs, receive regular rabies vaccinations. This is crucial for their health and reduces the risk of rabies transmission to humans.

Observation Period

After a potential exposure, observe the biting animal for 14 days. Healthy animals typically do not show signs of rabies during this period. If the animal remains healthy, it is unlikely to have transmitted rabies.

Monitoring Animal Behavior

Watch for any changes in the behavior of the animal. Signs of rabies can include aggression, excessive drooling, difficulty swallowing, staggering, paralysis, or unusual shyness.

If the Biting Animal Dies

If the animal dies within 2 weeks of the bite or exposure, notify your healthcare provider immediately. The animal should be tested for rabies to determine the risk and necessary follow-up actions.

Immediate Actions Post-Bite

Wash the wound thoroughly with soap and water.
Seek medical attention immediately. A healthcare professional will assess the risk and decide if post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is needed.

Completion of Rabies Vaccination Series

Follow your healthcare provider’s instructions to complete the full rabies vaccination series. This is critical for preventing the onset of rabies.
